• In this prayer, Paul asks God to deepen believers’ inner lives, not merely improve their outward behavior. He prays that Christ would “make His home” in their hearts, meaning Christ’s presence would be settled, active, and governing as they trust Him (v.17). From this relationship flows stability—believers become rooted and grounded in God’s love, which is the true source of spiritual strength.

 

  • Paul then prays that believers would have the spiritual power to grasp the vast dimensions of Christ’s love—wide, long, high, and deep (v.18). This love is not limited or shallow but immeasurable and shared within the community of God’s people.

 

  • Finally, Paul highlights a holy paradox: Christ’s love can be experienced even though it cannot be fully understood (v.19). As believers experience this love, they are made complete, filled with the very fullness, life, and power of God. Spiritual maturity, therefore, comes from living rooted in and continually experiencing the love of Christ.
