Exegesis Of Matthew 25:1-13
This parable sits within Jesus’ Olivet Discourse (Matthew 24–25), where He teaches about His return and the necessity of readiness.
1. Cultural Context
- Weddings in Jewish culture often happened at night.
- The bridegroom’s arrival was delayed and uncertain.
- Bridesmaids were expected to be ready with lamps (oil = preparation).
2. Symbolism
- Bridegroom → Christ
- Bridesmaids (Virgins) → Believers / professing followers
- Oil → Spiritual readiness (faith, Holy Spirit, obedience, relationship)
- Midnight Cry → Sudden, unexpected return of Christ
- Closed Door → Finality of judgment
3. Theological Emphasis
- Not everyone who appears ready actually is.
- Readiness cannot be borrowed or transferred.
- There will be a moment when opportunity ends.
